Implementation of multilingualism on the Viadrina websites
For the implementation of multilingualism on the Viadrina website, an interface to the translation AI DeepL will be programmed in the near future.
This technical solution is expected to be implemented in June 2024. The Viadrina websites will then be displayed in German, English, Polish, Ukrainian and French via a language switcher. The decision in favor of the interface, which is now being programmed specifically for the Viadrina, was made by the Executive Board on the recommendation of the relaunch team after testing various technical scenarios.
The translation then takes place semi-automatically in the CMS. Editors can create, correct and approve the translations of individual pages or sections using the interface and also exclude web pages from translations. For the translations, as before, the pages are created in the CMS in the respective „language pairs“.
In the transition period until implementation, this means that CMS editors can create multilingual pages in the respective language tree. The templates have already been copied over for the new faculty and department pages. You can access www.deepl.com for the translations.
In particular, this means that areas with exclusively non-German content should locate their pages in the language tree of the respective language. It is also important that there is no language mix on the pages - for example, no German-language and English-language content next to or on top of each other. Both are important for the findability of the pages via search engines and the subsequent translation by the interface.
If you need help copying from one language tree to the other, you can contact the web relaunch team by e-mail at webrelaunch@europa-uni.de.
